Sitting - a Great Tool When Things Are Difficult

Even when we’ve been practicing coming back to this moment, there can be times when difficult situations - problems in relationships, for example - cause a strong stream of thoughts to appear, which connect and form strong emotions. Sometimes they can almost take us over completely, making it very difficult to keep coming back to the moment. In our distraught state, we may even decide, “Forget this mindfulness stuff for now! I need to figure out what to do here!”

This is a time when meditation, “just sitting” can be very helpful. Sitting down, being aware of the breath, in and out, creates a cushion to put some space in between these thoughts and emotions, and creates some distance from them, so they no longer take us over. This also calms us down a bit, so we can see things more clearly.

Maybe the negative experiences have stirred up such strong emotions that we give them more weight and don’t consider the positive ones. As we meditate, this balance is restored.

In our frantic search for an answer, we miss ideas that intuition sometimes speaks to us softly. As we meditate, we quiet down and hear these ideas. Often, the answers we are looking for come to us this way.

So when things get frantic, and we can’t figure things out, let’s take some to just sit, be aware of our breathing, let the thoughts and feelings come, and, letting them go, come back to the breath.

A return to calmness and clarity, increased perspective, and better answers await!
